AmaPiano meets Gqom
Since the creation of kwaito and Mzansi-style deep house, two distinct genres of dance music have evolved – AmaPiano and Gqom. But until now, they’ve occupied very different spaces.
That’s where “iGama” comes in. A collaboration between proud purveyors of AmaPiano Born in Soweto and House Afrika, the track – by noted producer Gaba Cannal and KwaMashu powerhouse Dladla Mshunqisi – arrives at a time of debate in SA: which sub-genre will dominate in 2019?
The answer? Both. According to Gaba Cannal, the track should “quell any suggestions that’s there’s any rivalry between the artists” in each style. The track takes tropes familiar with AmaPiano – the slow pace and steady synth stabs – and adds the disembodied vocals and slightly darker, burrowing tones of Gqom to create a unique and catchy hybrid.
