100% South African House Vol. 1
Season’s greetings from House Afrika, who round out a successful 2018 with a digital-only bonus release, ‘100% South African House’ – 44 slices of golden Mzansi grooves.
As with the ‘Mzansi House’ series, this release highlights the choicest goodies from four of the country’s top producers. They are Sean Munnick – who was also one of the producers in focus on ‘Mzansi House 8’, out earlier this year – Loxion Deep (a stalwart of the ‘AmaPiano’ discs), Andy Mo, and Spin Worx.
Munnick steps up with some reliably deep work – these tracks bask in the kind of expert production that landed him on Claude von Stroke’s Dirtybird label – tricky vocal cut-ups, pleasantly spiky electronic ticks, whip-smart basslines. And in the spirit of giving, there’s even an electro-rap interlude featuring Afrikaans MC Early B.
Next up, Loxion Deep explores the chasm of sonic possibilities that lie between his trademark spin on AmaPiano and the widescreen Afro-tech being explored by the likes of Black Coffee and Jazzuelle. Starting out jazzily repetitive and trance-inducing, it then winds into more familiar downtempo territory, with on-lock licks intertwining with lifting horn stabs and body-rattling percussion.
Then, the newer names. Andy Mo arrives sounding like he’s been producing house since the era of the Chicago originators. His selection is superbly accomplished and varied – a trip through all the feelgood facets of the beloved genre. Finally, Spin Worx – previously featured on ‘House Afrika Sessions 8’ – lands with a host of vocalists in tow, giving his atmospheric rhythms a dose of divine Afro-soul.
If this is the kind of quality house Mzansi is capable of in 2019, bring on the New Year – and celebrate it with this sumptuous collection.
